After crying in front of her sister and her husband's friend, Mrs. Mallard went to her room to be alone. Whilst in her room, she pondered over the freedom she would have since her husband is now gone.

Some one was opening the front door with a latchkey. It was Brently Mallard...He had been far from the scene of the accident. As Louise came down the stairs, she heard her sister announce Brently's return. At that instance, she saw her freedom escape from her grasp, and she died.
