Текст на Статията

  • Act 1, Scene 1: 12-13
  • I cannot conceive you.
  • Sir, this young fellow's mother could....
  • Act 1, Scene 1: 56-74
  • Sir, I do love you more than words can wield the matter,Dearer than eyesight, space, and liberty,Beyond what can be valued, rich or rare...
  • Of all these bounds, even from this line to this,With shadowy forests and with champains riched,With plenteous rivers and wide-skirted meads,We make thee lady. To thine and Albany’s issueBe this perpetual.—What says our second daughter,Our dearest Regan, wife of Cornwall? Speak.
  • Sir, I am made of that self mettle as my sister,And prize me at her worth. In my true heart,I find she names my very deed of loveOnly she comes too short...
  • Act 1, Scene 1: 109-123
  • So young, my lord, and so true.
  • Let it be so. Thy truth then be thy dower. For by the sacred radiance of the sun,The mysteries of Hecate and the night,By all the operation of the orbsFrom whom we do exist and cease to be—Here I disclaim all my paternal care...
  • Good my liege--
  • The men Kent, Gloucester and his son Edmund are on their merry way just as The King is about to hold a meeting. Kent inquires about Edmund, and Gloucester responds by commenting that it's been hard to accept the bastard child as his own. Kent does not understand that fact at this point and says he can't conceive the meaning of what Gloucester has said. Gloucester then makes a pun relating to Edmund's mother illegitimately conceiving him, and promptly goes into detail.
  • Act 1, Scene 1: 296-302
  • The best and soundest of his time hath been but rash. Then must we look from his age to receive not alone the imperfections of long-engrafted condition, but therewithal the unruly waywardness that infirm and choleric years bring with them.
  • King Lear, with everyone relevant gathered around besides the princes of France and Burgundy vying for Cordelia, and Gloucester who had been sent to procure them, splits his territory into three parts. Each is planned to go towards one of his daughters, if they can prove their love and gratitude for him. The eldest two, Goneril and Regan, heavily exaggerate their speeches in favour.
  • Act 1, Scene 2: 44-58
  • Hum, conspiracy? “'Sleep till I wake him, you should enjoy half his revenue”—my son Edgar? Had he a hand to write this, a heart and brain to breed it in? When came this to you? Who brought it?
  • During the allotment, Cornelia decides instead to show Lear sincere and genuine love. This actually sets him off, as he proceeds to disown her and banish Kent for taking her side in the matter. France, however, takes Cordelia's hand in marriage, for who she truly is.
  • Act 1, Scene 2: 163-168
  • Goneril and Regan immediately begin discussing plans to take advantage of their ageing father once everybody else leaves. They talk of Lear's worsening judgment, in disowning Cordelia and banishing Kent, and decide to strike on his next outburst.
  • Such unconstant starts are we like to have from him as this of Kent’s banishment.
  • Edmund concocts a scheme in order to inherit the family fortune, since he can't do so by birthright as a bastard. It involves tricking Gloucester into thinking his legitimate son, Edgar, is a back-stabbing fiend through letter forgery.
  • I hope, for my brother’s justification, he wrote this but as an essay or taste of my virtue.
  • Edgar arrives on the scene some time after Gloucester leaves to pursue him. Edmund pretends to be on his side and help him find the one spreading lies about his villainy.
  • That’s my fear. I pray you, have a continent forbearance till the speed of his rage goes slower. And as I say, retire with me to my lodging, from whence I will fitly bring you to hear my lord speak. Pray ye, go. There’s my key. If you do stir abroad, go armed.
  • Some villain hath done me wrong.
