- While dying Johnny discovers something new, 'I don't want to die now. It ain't long enough. Sixteen years ain't long enough' (Hinton 121). Johnny before going to the country wanted to die because of his bad life but after coming back home as a hero, he realized he wanted to live, showing his character growth and contradiction of his earlier self. He shows there is something to live for.
- After Johnny's death Dally reaches his breaking point, slowly crumpled with a look of triumph on his face... I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted (Hinton 154). Johnny was not only important to the entire gang but also to Dally personally. After Johnny passed, Dally wanted to die and so he did. This shows Dally, the toughest part of the gang, broken after Johnny's death. We can all be vulnerable and thats okay.
- Johnny's wrote last words to Ponyboy, I've been thinking about it, and that poem, that guy that wrote it, he meant you're gold when you're a kid, like green. When you're a kid everything's new, dawn. It's just when you get used to everything that it's day (Hinton 178). Johnny's last spoken words to Ponyboy was to stay gold. Johnny meant don't get tired of life and explore. Johnny said after he explored Windrixville he wanted to explore more. Try new things and keep exploring.
