- The story takes place in a village in Japan, where a young farmer and his mother, The Wise Old woman lived together under the rule of a cruel young lord who made a rule that once you turned 71 you must go to the mountains to die, because the young lord thought they were useless and will not help with anything.
- Climax
- The wise old woman turned 71. the young farmer then took the wise old woman to the mountains to die.
- Falling Action
- The young farmer instead hides his mother, the wise old woman in a hole under the kitchen and provides her with food and water.
- Resolution
- Lord Higa threatens to take the village of they don't complete 3 impossible tasks.
- The young farmer tells his mother about the impossible tasks. She then says they are not impossible and tells him how to do them the farmer tells the lord how to complete them.
- Not Impossible
- Lord Higa decides not to attack and the young lord now gets rid of the rule to make people the age of 71 go to the mountains to die.
