- The Greeks and Persians had a long rivalry and due to the tension of this rivalry, they started the Persian Wars.
- Conflict and Escalation
- Darius I, Kind of Persia, decided he wanted to conquer the Greeks in 490 B.C. He gathered a vast army of soldiers that outnumbered any army the Greeks could muster. They boarded the Persian fleet and headed to Greece.

- Ten years later, in 480 B.C. the son of Darius I, King Xerxes decided to get his revenge on the Greeks. He amassed a huge army of over 200,000 soldiers and 1,000 warships.
- Results of the Persian War

- Xerxes burnt Athens down while Greeks fled to the island of Salamis.
- Greeks had small boats that helped them navigate the narrow channel while the Persians had big boats that were difficult to control / turn. Xerxes sat back and watched over a third of his fleet be destroyed.
- Athens organized the Delian League, an alliance with other Greek city-states, once they realized being unified and fighting together was better doing it alone.
