- The story begins by introducing and 16 year-old girl whose named starr. She the protagonists of the story. She lives with her family in Garden Heights and goes to a white private school called Williamson prep.
- Climax
- Starr went to this party with her step-sister, Keyna, She see her old best friend who she hasn't seen in awhile, Khalil. They leave in the car together, and gets pulled over by a cop who thinks Khalil has a gun and ends up killing him.
- Falling Actions
- Starr is very scared to testify to the judge about what happened that night but she does it anyways because she wants everyone to know the truth about what happened that night he was killed
- Resolution
- The jury decides the officer is not guilty and riots begin because khalil died for no reason and the person who killed him is still walking a breathing making people upset again
- Starr speaks at the head of the protest but the she gets caught in the ensuing chaos when the police start to throw canisters of tear gas into the crowds, king sets the store on fire
- This leads to Starr and her family moving to a new neighborhood because they feel its to dangerous to stay in the place they're living at
