  • Stanley Miller and his professor Harold Urey worked to conduct the Miller-Urey experiment where they simulated the ancient water cycle. The goal of this was to test the first step in Oparin's outline from simple chemistry to living cells.
  • After just a week the water they were testing turned brown. This revealed that in that time many complex molecules had been produced and proved that biomolecules can be formed under ancient earth-like conditions. It also turned the speculation that life may have emerged from chemistry and turned part of it into provable science.
  • The RNA World Hypothesis states that chains of RNA may have been the first things to replicate and evolve. The backbone part of the nucleotide connect together to create chains of RNA. The bases of nucleotides can also connect, but only to certain ones. When bases connect it is called base pairing.
  • When the chains fold over and base pair with themselves they create unique shapes and therefore have different functions. These are called ribozymes. Scientists conducted experiments to see if these folded chains of RNA could have a function where they are able to create nucleotides. • The endosymbiotic theory states that eukaryotes evolved from prokaryotes by engulfing them. This was possible because they were so much larger. Instead of the small bacteria digesting however, they stayed intact inside. • Eventually, some of the larger cells also engulfed the bacteria that were able to do photosynthesis. It is believed that the bacteria that used oxygen to create energy evolved in mitochondria and the bacteria that used sunlight to create their food evolved to become chloroplasts. The mitochondria evolved first because all cells have mitochondria, but not all have chloroplasts. Further proof to show this is that both mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own DNA. The size of the two are also similar to the size of bacteria and when they divide they divide similarly to bacteria.
