- If it were done when ’tis done, then ’twere wellIt were done quickly. If the assassinationCould trammel up the consequence, and catchWith his surcease success; that but this blowMight be the be-all and the end-all here,But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,We’d jump the life to come. But in these casesWe still have judgment here, that we but teachBloody instructions, which, being taught, returnTo plague the inventor. This even-handed justiceCommends the ingredients of our poised chaliceTo our own lips. He's here in double trust
- Macbeth debates whether he should kill the King or not. States all reasons as to why he shouldn't proceed in the plan.
- Vaulting ambition, which overleaps itselfAnd falls on the other.
- Enter Lady Macbeth
- Know you not he has?
- He has almost supped. Why have you left the camber?
- Hath he asked for me?
- How now, what news?
- Macbeth gives other reasons that he thinks will convince his wife to abort their mission.
- We will proceed no further in this business.He hath honored me of late, and I have boughtGolden opinions from all sorts of people,Which would be worn now in their newest gloss, Not cast aside so soon.
- When you durst do it, then you were a man,And, to be more than what you were, you wouldBe so much more the man. Nor time nor placeDid then adhere, and yet you would make both.
