  • We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though my passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.
  • South Carolina votes to seceded from the Union leading other states to think about seceding as well. Senator John Crittenden came up with a compromise saying all slavery will be protected in all territory under the 36 30 line. No one wanted to agree with the compromise, including Lincoln and the Southern states.
  • Most had different thoughts and opinions to South Carolina seceding. Many people in South Carolina were excited and happy that they had seceded from the Union. Others were scared and worried about how it might affect the U.S. like Robert E. Lee.
  • Lincoln is not yet president when South Carolina decided to secede from the Union, but will be inaugurated soon after. Many wondered how he would react. During his Inaugural Address, he stated that secession would not be permitted and laws of the U.S. would be enforced.
