  • The 1763 Proclamation was enacted following the war. The war had just been won by the British. The colonists recently concluded a war of savagery for the British. The colonists assumed that they would receive land after the war as compensation for their efforts. But the announcement put an end to all of their land-related fantasies. The declaration essentially claims that the colonists were forbidden from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains, which prevented them from receiving the land they were due.

  • The British Parliament finally enacted the Stamp Act, also known as the Duties in American Colonies Act, on March 22, 1765. Every page of printed document used by colonists was subject to taxation. The tax also included fees for papers, cards, and playing cards. Boycotts of British products led to rioting and attacks on tax collectors. The Stamp Act was the British government's first direct levy used to collect income from the colonies.

  • In 1767, the British Parliament passed the Townshend Acts, which placed tariffs on commodities carried further into American colonies. American colonists, however, saw the Acts as an abuse of authority because they were not represented in Parliament. Because colonists had objected to the Stamp Act's direct tax, Townshend mistakenly expected they would accept a new indirect levies, known as duties. These additional levies increased public outrage over the unfairness of taxing without representation.
  • On March 5, 1770, the Boston Massacre took place. It all began on King Street with a scuffle between an American colonist and a British soldier. Things quickly heated up between the two, resulting in a larger brawl. Things were extremely chaotic, resulting in fatalities. The name of the massacre might lead you to believe that hundreds of people were killed, but in reality, only about six people were killed.
  • The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773. Griffin's Wharf in Boston was the site of a political demonstration. The colonists were furious at the British government for taxing tea. Because their dissatisfaction was so intense, they banded together to protest. As part of their protest, they dropped boxes of tea leaves into the harbor as a form of retaliation against the government.
