  • Booker T. Washington was born into slavery on April 5, 1856, his life had little promise early on. Washington's mother, Jane, worked as a cook for plantation owner James Burroughs
  • When Booker was 9 he was realed from slavery and walked 225 miles to West Virginia, and began working in a salt furnace and coal mines
  • Washington enrolled at the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, working as a janitor to help pay expenses. He graduated in 1875.
  • Washington was self-motivated and committed to his own education from a young age. Washington chose to concentrate on what black people could accomplish by focusing on learning industrial skills
  • Washington played a dominant role in black politics, winning wide support in the black community of the South and among more liberal whites (especially rich Northern whites). He gained access to top national leaders in politics.
  • Booker T. Washington advised Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. His infamous conflicts with Black leaders like W. E. B. Du Bois over segregation caused a stir, but today, he is remembered as the most influential African American speaker of his time
