  • Malala Yousafzai was born in Mingora, Pakistan, on July 12, 1997. Malala had a hunger for education from an early age. Her father, a dedicated education advocate himself, led a learning institution in the city for many years, and school was an important part of Malala's family.
  • The Taliban took control of the Swat Valley and swiftly rose to dominate most of northern Pakistan. Girls were not allowed to attend school, and cultural activities like as dancing and viewing television were forbidden. The Taliban had destroyed 400 schools by the end of 2008.
  • When Yousafzai was 11 years old, her father drove her to a local press club in Peshawar to protest school closures, and she delivered her maiden speech, "How Dare the Taliban Take Away My Basic Right to Education?" Her lecture was well publicised in Pakistan.

  • Malala Yousafzai, 15, was shot by the Taliban early on October 9, 2012. One of the bullets pierced her skull, escaped, and became stuck in her shoulder.

  • Malala travelled to New York on July 12, 2013, her 16th birthday, and addressed before the United Nations. That same year, she released her first book, an autobiography titled "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban."
