  • If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population
  • Charity for the poor
  • The story begins by saying that Jacob Marely, Scrooges business partner is as dead as a doornail. Scrooge is described as a cold and horrible which is followed by Bob Cratchit trying to warm his hands on a candle as the feeble fire is going out.
  • If you must...
  • Scrooge's nephew, Fred, enters to wish his uncle a "Merry Christmas" and invite him to a christmas dinner the next day. Fred is excused by his relative with "Bah! Humbug!" amoung other words, anyone who says 'Merry Christmas' should be boiled in their own pudding and buried with a branch of holly through their heart.
  • AHHHH!
  • Two 'portly gentlemen', collecting charity for the poor, come in afterwards, but they too are rejected by Scrooge, who says the prisons and workhouses are enough for the poor which his taxes pay for. When Scrooge is told that many would rather die than go there, he snaps ...
  • It's HUMBUG still
  • At the end oof the workday, Scrooge reluctantly allows Cratchit to take Christmas Day off, but to arrive all early the day after. Scrooge leaves the counting house, eats dinner at his all usual tavern, and returns to his home, an isolated house formerly owned by his business partner, Jacob Marley.
  • When Scrooge arrives home, he is startled to see the ghostly face of his partner, Marley, appear on the knocker of the door. He disregards this and heads up the stairs. When Scrooge enters his house he checks all his house for anything out of the usual, but it only when scrooge sits down satisfied that he hears chains dragging up the stairs.
  • Marley's ghost has come to warn Scrooge that his miserableness and horridness to others will lead him to the same fate Marley himself suffers in death. Marely says that Scrooges chain will be much heavier than due to his greediness and how much longer he lives for, the only way to free himself from this fate is to be happy again and that the three spirits that will visit him and help him.
