- Captain NemoHe is the Captain of the submarine, Nautilus, which he built to roam the depths of the sea. Nemo is a scientific genius, a reticent man who wishes to have nothing to do with the world. The captain is loyal to his crew and enjoys impressing his guests with his scientific discoveries. Though short-tempered, Nemo maintains great control over himself. He is also a man of great courage.
- Professor AronnaxPierre Aronnax is an Assistant Professor in the Museum of Natural History in Paris. He has a keen interest in the secrets of the sea. He was invited by the United States Government to join an expedition to pursue the Nautilus. However, he was held captive by Captain Nemo during the expedition. Whilst on board the Nautilus, Professor Aronnax learnt of many secrets of the sea.
- Ned LandNed Land is a Canadian, who is known all over the seven seas as the 'prince of harpooners' .He possesses an uncommon quickness of hand. He has skills, coolness, audacity and is cunning, which makes him a master in his profession. Ned is forty years of age and tall in height. The bold look on his face attracts everybody's attention. He performs brave acts twice in the novel, once by saving Professor Aronnax and another time by saving Captain Nemo from the shark.
- ConseilConseil is Professor Aronnax's manservant. He is loyal to the Professor and was also held captive on the Nautilus. Conseil is brave and courageous. When he saw that Professor Aronnax was in danger of drawing, he jumped into the sea to save his life.
