- Charlie works in a factory as a janitor. The people he thinks are his friends are actually really mean and make fun of him, he just doesn't realize it.
- Climax
- Charlie is selected for the experiment and takes a bunch of tests, including the one with the ink blots, and the one with Algernon and the maze.
- Falling Action
- Charlie goes through the operation, and gradually sees himself get smarter.
- Resolution
- Charlie is in the restaurant and sees people make fun of the dishwasher boy. This is a moment of realization for him because he realizes that he was laughing at the boy too, even though he knows how bad it feels to be made fun of.
- After being smart for a while after his operation, Algernon starts to regress and get worse, and eventually Algernon dies.
- Charlie decides to leave New York because he doesn't want people to feel sorry for him as he regresses.
