The story of Romulus and Remus

- After Numitor was crowned king, Romulus and Remus decided that they didn't want to wait to become rulers. Instead they wanted to rule their own land near where the She wolf and Faustulus found them as infants. While trying to find where to build the city there was a complication. The brothers both disagreed on where the city should be built. Although they both agreed to settle near the Tiber river, Romulus believed that the Palantine hill was the best place to build the city partly because it was nearest to where they had been found as infants. Remus disagreed with Romulus and said that the Aventine hill was the best place to build the city because it was less steep and therefore easier to build on.
- I was right! Six vultures flew above the Aventine hill so we should build the city there.
- No! I was right because I saw 12 vultures fly over the Palantine hill.
- Since they wished to resolve their quarrel peacefully, they went to Numitor for advice. Numitor told them that they should determine where to build the city by doing an augury. Remus declared that the Aventine hill was the place where he would look for the augury. While Romulus decided that he would look for the augury at the Palantine hill. While they watched for a sign, a flight of six vultures was seen above the Aventine hill, which Remus took as a sign that they should build the city there. Although, right after that, Romulus spotted twelve vultures above the Palantine hill. Since they did not determine how the augury was going to be interpreted, they argued over who was right and who was wrong.
- During the fight between Romulus and Remus, Remus was killed. Because of this, Romulus became the ruler of the new kingdom. This kingdom was called Rome. Romulus started to build his city and over time he instituted laws in a system of government. He appointed twelve lictors. Lictors were counselors who attended the king and served justice. Romulus also appointed one hundred senators to help make laws. Even though Rome was running well, it was lacking in women, and therefore children among the settlers. They needed children in Rome because they needed a new generation to pass on the laws and customs of Rome. So Romulus sent emissaries to neighboring cities to ask if any of their families or women would be willing to join Rome. Unfortunately, the emissaries didn't find anyone who was willing to leave.
- You should join our new city called Rome!
- We're sorry, but we aren't willing to leave our homes and families.
- We don't care what you say. We have the right to get married and have children! We will defeat you!
- The families were of course still extremely angry about this situation and thought it unjust, therefore, soon many armies started attacking Rome. These armies were disorganized and their campaign was ludicrous, so they were defeated, and their own towns were taken by Romulus and his troops. Although, before the Romans could pillage the towns and kill the inhabitants, Silio, who was the wife of Romulus, begged Romulus to spare the townsfolk. Romulus agreed to this, but on the condition that the families would join Rome. The townsfolk agreed to this as well, and moved to Rome. Although there were a few more wars that followed, the Romans emerged victorious from all of them. Legend says that one day Romulus was taken up to heaven by a divine storm, and then became immortal. Over all, Romulus ruled well and was respected as a ruler.
- Romulus took the fact that people didn't want to leave their homes and families to join Rome as an insult, and therefore decided that if they could not have brides by consent, they would take the brides by force. Romulus set up a trap, and told everyone that there would be great games at the harvest festival that they were hosting, called the feast of consuela, celebrating the god, Neptune. People from many neighboring cities came to watch the competitions and to honor Neptune. During the festival, Romulus and the Romans captured the young women and dragged them back into Rome. The families immediately demanded that their daughters would be returned, but Romulus and the men refused and said that they had the right to marry and have children.
- You are being extremely unjust and unfair!
