  • The Constitutional Convention took place from May 14 to September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The point of the event was to decide how America was going to be governed. Although the Convention had been officially called to revise the existing Articles of Confederation, many delegates had much bigger plans. Many delegates believed that the federal government should be able to overrule state laws, but others feared that a strong federal government would oppress their citizens.
  • Too much power will oppress citizens!

  • Who is going to have more power?
  • The federal government should ovverule state laws!
  • Once it was decided that representation in the House of Representatives was to be based on population, delegates from Northern and Southern states saw another issue arise: how enslaved people should be counted.Delegates from Northern states, where the economy did not rely heavily on the enslavement of African people, felt that enslaved people should not be counted toward representation because counting them would provide the South with a greater number of representatives. Southern states fought for enslaved individuals to be counted in terms of representation. The compromise between the two became known as the three-fifths compromise because every five enslaved people would be counted as three individuals in terms of representation.
  • Only the free ones should be accounted for!
  • 3 slaves out of every 5 will be acocunted for determining represenation and direct taxation .
  • Every slave should be counted!

  • We want representation!
  • The Articles of Confederation provided that each state would be represented by one vote in Congress. The Virginia Plan provided for representation to be based on the population of each state. On the other hand, the New Jersey Plan proposed equal representation for every state..The Great Compromise was an agreement made among the delegates to the Constitutional Convention that the American government would have two houses in Congress: the Senate where each state has two Senators, and the House of Representatives where each state has a number of Representatives based on population.
  • We want equal representaion for the small states !
  • We want representaion based on population.
  • Federalists argued that the Constitution did not need a bill of rights, because the people and the states kept any powers not given to the federal government. Anti-Federalists held that a bill of rights was necessary to safeguard individual liberty. In todays society a pandemic arose causing conflict between this idea of common good and individual rights.Half of the country does not want to get infected or infect others while the other half argues for their livelihood wanting to get back to work. Therefore, a conflict that arises in todays society between the common good and individual liberty is the idea of individuality. Having strong opinions makes the common good harder to establish.
  • We do not need a bill of rights! States and the people will have the power not given to the federal government.
  • We need the bill of rights to secure indiviudal liberty!
  • All those in favor?
  • The government will take away our liberties!
