- Man vs. Self: In the story Muiriel is constantly fighting with the fact that she doesn’t belong anywhere and is always going from place to place and never staying put. So she keeps her bag packed light, ready to go.

- Character vs. Character: In the story Joellen is talking to Muir about how it is extremely important that she try to stay in one place so she can finish high school and she needs to not leave

- Muir is not dealing with her struggle of not staying put and feeling like she doesn't belong. She just is overwhelmed with trying to not ruin her plan of getting out and starting her own life. She is making friends, going to parties, and even getting boyfriends. She is looking over the fact that she feels out of place and like she doesn't belong, like she doesn't deserve all of this. This tells us about Muir that she has a very complex life and she struggles and makes rash decisions because she figures she is not staying long so it doesn't matter. The theme relates around this because she is not healing and learning from the past but just looking over everything.
