  • Since the Persian Empire's lack of success to conquer all of Europe, there were forty years of peace that followed. The Greek civilization rose in importance. The Golden Age of Greece was known all through this time. In the Battle of Salamis which was September 480 BC, the Greek navy had only about 220 ships, causing it to be outnumbered, versus the Persian navy with about 1,200. The Battle of Salamis created a turning point in Greek history since Xerxes was unable to defeat Greece without his navy.
  • The influence of Alexander the Great is large-scale and very great. His father Philip II of Macedon succeeded in bringing together the Greek city-states, which paved the way for Alexander to overtake Persia. Alexander's control helped to spread Greek culture in Asia and the rest of his empire.
  • In 431 to 405 B.C., Sparta and Athens were at war with one another. The Peloponnesian War caused a period of economic failure that created the end of what is known as the Golden Period and charted a power shift in ancient Greece. Sparta was the one who claimed power.
