- Josephine Mrs. Mallard's sister knows she suffers from heart conditions. She begins to comfort her because she is concerned that the news they will soon reveal will shatter her.

- Richards a good friend of the Mallards received news that his dear friend Mr. Mallard has passed due to a train accident. Josephine still with her sister and Richards by her side she finally builds up the courage to tell her sister about the incident involving her husband.
- Resolution
- After hearing the news about her husbands death Mrs. Mallard has an unusual reaction after hearing the news. She struggles to understand the way she feels. Suddenly she comes to the realization that she is free without her husband and she is glad.
- Mrs Mallard now feeling blessed to be free makes her way down the stairs looking a little too well for a widower. She sees Richards who looks worried and as if he is trying to hide something... but it was too late.
- It was revealed that richards had been trying to hide Mrs. Mallards not so dead husband. This struck Mrs. Mallard which resulted in her death. The doctors said that Mrs Mallard did die of heart disease of" joy that kills."
