  • I learned about the different types of literary terms. Some of these terms were foreshadowing, imagery, and tone.
  • Hello, today I will be telling you what I learned in English 9 this semester.
  • Tone is the general character or attitude of a place, piece of writing or situation.
  • Foreshadowing is a literary device used by authors, writers, and others to create more suspense. It is seen as a hint, or shadow of what will happen later.
  • Imagery is visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in literary work.
  • Here are some quote examples from The Most Dangerous Game.
  • Imagery: "He struggled up to the surface and tried to cry out, but the wash from the speeding yacht slapped him in the face and the salt water in his open mouth made him gag and strangle."
  • Tone: "OFF THERE to the right--somewhere--is a large island," said Whitney." It's rather a mystery--" "What island is it?" Rainsford asked. "The old charts call it `Ship-Trap Island,"' Whitney replied."
  • Foreshadowing: "Rainsford heard a sound. It came out of the darkness, a high screaming sound, the sound of an animal in an extremity of anguish and terror. He did not recognize the animal that made the sound; he did not try to; with fresh vitality he swam toward the sound. He heard it again; then it was cut short by another noise, crisp, staccato."
  • I also learned about grammar concepts.
  • I learned about direct objects, indirect objects, and predicate nominatives.
  • A direct object is a noun phrase denoting a person or thing that is the recipient of the action of a transitive verb.
  • An indirect object is a noun phrase referring to someone or something that is affected by the action of a transitive verb, but is not the primary object.
  • A predicate nominative is a word in the nominative case that completes a copulative verb.
  • Here are some examples.
  • Charlie is my son. In this sentence son is the predicate nominative.
  • Jemmy fed the dog. In this sentence the dog is the direct object.
  • Give him the book. In this sentence him is the indirect object.
  • My favorite subject I learned this semester is Romeo and Juliet. It was a great story.
  • Puppy! How cute!
