- Sotomayor was born in the Bronx borough of New York City on June 25, 1954. Her parents were both born and raised in Puerto Rico. Sotomayor’s father was a manual laborer and her mother was a nurse. Spanish was Sotomayor’s first language and the language spoken at home by her family.
