  • Hi, my name is Molly. I am 6 years old. I like to draw and ride my bike.
  • I have a superpower. I have a special eye. It looks and moves almost like my other eye.
  • I like to tell my friends the story of how I got my special eye:
  • One day, Mommy noticed that the colour of my eye changed from blue to green. Like a chameleon!
  • When Mommy took a picture of my eye, the middle of the eye looked white!
  • Mommy took me to visit Doctor Stanley. Doctor Stanley knows a lot about eyes, he is an ophthalmologist.
  • He told me that there was a lump living inside my eye. The lump had a name – retinoblastoma.
  • That’s a long name! But Doctor Stanley said I can call it a tumor.
  • Doctor Stanley introduced me to another doctor who knows a lot about tumors, she is an oncologist. Her name is Doctor Smith.
  •
  • Doctor Smith explained to me that the tumor had made a cozy home inside my eye. It had been living there for one month.
  • But it wasn’t being a very nice guest. The tumor didn’t take care of my eye while it lived there, so my eye became sick.
  • We tried to turn down the temperature in the eye to freeze it, but it was too strong.
  • We tried to fight it using laser beams, but it dodged them all.
  • We didnt want the tumor to make a mess in the rest of my body.
  • Doctor Stanley put a tube in my leg and wiggled it through my body to reach the tumor in my eye. We put a special potion through the tube and it made the tumor smaller. But even if the tumor was smaller, it was still mighty!
  •
  • I could trade my eye with the tumor, for a brand new special eye! This eye would almost look like my real eye.
  • Doctor Stanley said there was one more way to get rid of the tumor once and for all.
  • I went to the hospital and met the rest of my superhero team.
  • Doctor Stanley was going to do a surgery to take out my eye. Nurse Lily was going to take care of me after the surgery. Ocularist Jen was going to make a special eye that fit me just right.
  • I put on my blue superhero cape. Doctor Stanley gave me sleep medicine, then removed my eye.
  • After the surgery, I wore glasses and a patch to protect my eye socket.
  • A few weeks later, Ocularist Jen created the perfect special eye to match my real eye.
  • Getting used to my new superpower was hard at first. But Mommy and Daddy helped me take care of my new eye. Ocularist Jen taught me how to keep it squeaky clean.
  • I learned how to draw and ride a bike again.
  • I even started swimming and skating.
  • When I grow up, I am going to teach kids like you and me about retinoblastoma.
  • Molly will teach children and parents about retinoblastoma, including:
