- Australia: Melville Island
- In the Dreamtime there was a family, Purukupali (dad) Bima (mum) and their child Jinini. They lived on Melville Island and each day they would hunt together for berries and grubs.
- We goin to get food come along me?
- One day Bima was out in the forest when the evil pioson man, Japara came along. He convinced Bima to go with him into the forest and leave baby Jinini alone.
- Leave Jinini under this tree in the shade. Come along me into forest.
- Bima and Japara were out in the forest for a long time. The sun moved and baby Jinini as no longer in the shade of the tree. Purukupali came to see Jinini had burnt to death. He waited for Bima and Japara to return. He was so enraged he struck them both in wild anger and chased them into the forest.
- Why you do this? You don't know how to raise a child!!
- In his rage Purukupali proclaimed more death. He picked up Jinini and carried him into the ocean where he drowned himself. He remains there in the ocean today as a dangerous whirlpool causing bad currents oFf Melville Island.
- This time everybody die! Die here! Die there and die there!!
- Japara, banished, is now old man moon. It is said that all the craters are scars from the stick Purukupali beat him with. Bima carries scars on her head too, she is now the curlew bird, a Wayai. They say she can still be heard, roaming in the forest, searching for her lost child, Jinini. This dreamtime story explains the Aboriginals belief of death, Sorry Business.
