- In the beginning it was all darkness, and papatūānuku and ranginui layed together. they had many children who layed between them.
- After many attempts, they almost gave up but Tāne Mahuta, the god of forest and man had a different approach. He laid down with his back on papatūānuku and he forcefully pushed his legs against his father ranginui. It worked and Ranginui got stretched through the heavens creating the sky. Papatūānuku stretched across the ground to make the earth we stand on today.
- the children were sick of staying squished between their mother and father so they wanted to make a change. Tūmatauenga, the god of war and humanity suggested that they kill their parents.
- the children were happy for a little while until they realized how sad and angry their parents were. Ranginui was extremely sad to be separated from his wife Papatūānuku, so he was crying a lot, when it is raining, this is Ranginui thinking about his partner. Papatūānuku let out loud cries.

- They had many tries to split up their stubborn parents but nothing seemed to work. Rongomatane failed, Tangaroa failed, Haumiatiketike failed.
