- The lord Brahma gifted Mahishasura immortality under the condition that only a woman can defeat him.
- With the blessing of immortality, Mahishasura attackted the trilok- earth, heaven and hell. The gods were helpless as only a woman can defeat him.
- To defeat him, Lord Vishu created a woman to defeat him. It is believed that Goddess Durga is the reincarnation of Goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva.
- After Goddess Durga was created she fought with Mahishasura for 15 long days. This fight affected the trilok- Earth, Heaven and Hell.
- Being smart, Mahishasura kept changing his form to confuse Goddess Durga. When he took the form of a Buffalo, Goddess Durga peirced him with her 'trishul'(a forked weapon) and Mahishasura was finally killed.
- On each day of Navratri, different avatars of Goddess Durga are worshiped.
