- Hi! My name is Roy Keane and I am a 12 year old boy from Dublin, Ireland. I live with my parents and two older siblings Seamus and Mary
- We are a poor catholic family that farms for our landlord. Like many catholic farmers we do not own our land and can be evicted from our home at any time by our landlord
- We mostly grow potatoes on the farm but also grow barley, wheat and oats. The last crops are called our "money crops". I spend all my day on the farm with my brother Seamus and sister Mary
- In 1845, the Great Potato Famine began sweeping across Ireland. Three quarters of the crop was destroyed leaving people without food and money. Millions of Irish died of starvation and many were evicted from their homes by landlords who flattened homes to make more farm land to grow "money crops"

- Roy's family left Ireland on April 3, 1846 on a ship bound to a port in Boston, Massachusetts. The ship was nicknamed "coffin ship" for the number of deaths that occurred on the ship during the trip to America. On the trip Roy's sister and mother died.
- Many Irish families including my father, brother Seamus and myself could not afford to move inland so we had to stay on the waterfronts of Boston. We lived in small slums or rooming houses with no sanitation or clean water
- Many of us that came from Ireland were not skilled workers so we took any cheap labor jobs we could find in factories or construction
- The Irish were not welcome by the working class Bostonian's and conflicts arose during those times. Places would hang up signs " No Irish need apply" on many windows
- There were more Catholics in Boston due to the Irish immigration and my family always went to church on Sunday. This was a cause of unrest with the predominantly puritan society in Boston.
- Things improved over the years for Irish immigrants and they contributed in many ways to the growth of the United States. They helped build schools we still have today.
- The Irish contributed to building several railroads across the United States
