  • What do I do?
  • Learning disability
  • I will go see what's wrong with her
  • You have a very sick child
  • Too difficult to take care of Gina at home
  • Why can't she be in this class?
  • What do I do?
  • Why aren't they helping Gina reach her goals?
  • Professor Nikki Mirabella's description of the very beginning of Gina's life really conveyed the chaos and fear she was experiencing as all of these doctors were talking to her about her daughter.
  • Will this school be better for Gina?
  • The amount of advocacy Mirabella needed to do as Gina's mom throughout her schooling experience seems shocking, but I can imagine this may be a common experience for parents of children with disabilities. In this instance, the school was reluctant to put Gina in a "high-functioning" class based on how they perceived her abilities. As a teacher, I would try my best to consider parent input in class placement, so that the parents are being heard.
  • Why are they not working on Gina's socialization skills?
  • Mirabella expressed that at Gina's school, she felt that the school was only providing her with reports of the things that Gina wasn't doing, and wasn't providing any information on how they might help her achieve. As a teacher, I would make sure to listen to parents during meetings about their children, so I may try to directly address their concerns, and consider their suggestions if they have any.
  • Will she be safe?
  • How will she get by in the classroom?
  • Mirabella also needed to speak up in order to have Gina transferred to a new school in another district. As a teacher, I might not have much direct say in students transferring schools, but I would let parents know who they may be able to talk to to find help.
  • Mirabella was not happy with the amount of socialization Gina was getting, so she pushed the school for more programs that would let her develop these skills. I think that another way to make sure parents voices are heard is to let them contribute to something like a school website or blog, to discuss their views on school programs and possibly make suggestions.
  • Reading "Introduction from a Mom" and watching the video presentation, I was struck by the uncertainty that Professor Mirabella felt, the amount of advocacy she needed to do for her child, and by everything Gina has accomplished. I am glad that Gina had her mom as such a strong advocate, but some kids may not be as lucky, so as a teacher I need to do my best to be that advocate myself so that parents will feel confident with me as their teacher.
  • Who will help her?
  • Will the teachers know what makes her happy?
