I volunteered through United Way. They offered a lot of virtual opportunities. I chose to make videos reading children's books. If anything I expected to see the difference that I was making. As I made the videos I realized that this way of volunteering was more disconnected. United Way believes that helping others benefits more than the person you help, but also the community.
I made 3 videos for United Way. Reading and recording each video took about an hour. I read "The Boy Whose Head was Full of Stars," "Are you my Momma?," and "Sam and the Firefly." That was 3 hours of volunteer time. The challenge of any sort of volunteering is always balancing that with work and school. The challenge of this specific activity was not getting to see the reactions of the kids I read to.
I recorded the videos on my lunch break. I think I would volunteer in this way again, but when I'm allowed to read in person. I think the most important thing that this taught me is that I really wasn't participating in the community as much as I thought. Three hours isn't very many so I looked for other opportunities that led me to interact with others.
After I submitted my videos I volunteered again, but this time with SECOR. I met with them twice for 3 hours each time. From 9 am to 11 am we packed boxes of food into different trucks so that we could later hand out the food at college campuses. I appreciated this the most because I have been on the receiving end of that food.
