Upon seeing the yellow car, she believes she is running out to Tom to escape George. Myrtle is then hit and killed by the yellow car, which drives away.
Seeing George is distraught, Tom comforts him while trying to hide his own sadness. He blames Gatsby for Myrtle's death.
