Vast DesertsThere are two major deserts in the Southwest: the Sonoran Desert and the Chihuahua Desert. The Sonoran Desert has large, sandy plains and bare mountains, and covers much of New Mexico and Arizona. The Chihuahuan Desert, which is the largest desert in North America, spans from Mexico into parts of Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.

Plateaus and CanyonsA plateau is a flat, elevated landform that rises at least on one side. One of the major plateaus in the Southwest is the Colorado Plateau. Spanning across Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, this plateau covers about 240 thousand square miles! Located within the Colorado Plateau is the Grand Canyon. A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides. The Grand Canyon is 217 miles long, and up to 18 miles wide at some points.

WaterThe two major rivers that flow through the Southwest region are the Rio Grande and the Colorado River. The Rio Grande begins in Colorado and flows through New Mexico and Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. This river is over 1,800 miles long! The Colorado River flows through part of Arizona and empties into the Gulf of California. To prevent the river from causing terrible floods, the Hoover Dam was completed in 1936. The Colorado River flows through part of the Grand Canyon!
