Pilgrims Depart England

The Mayflower Compact is Written

A Hard Winter

Meeting the Wampanoags

The First Thanksgiving

On September 16, 1620, 102 Pilgrims and over 30 crew members begin their journey to the New World in search of religious freedom.

The Mayflower Compact was written by the settlers and signed on November 11, 1620. It outlined fair rules for the colony that the settlers agreed to follow.

The following winter brought incredible hardship. The Pilgrims were not prepared for the cold and had inadequate shelter and were overcome with disease. Over half lost their lives during this time.

In the spring of 1621, the Pilgrims met a Wampanoag named Samoset. He introduced them to Squanto, who spoke English and taught the Pilgrims how to survive in their new colony.

After their first successful harvest, the Pilgrims invited the Wampanoag people to a grand feast to celebrate. This later became known as the First Thanksgiving .
