- Pip needs money to help Magwitch escape so he again visits Ms. Havisham for help. She promises to help him and as he leaves, her dress catches fire which Pip tries to put out. Both of them get injured in the process.
- Abel attempts to escape through the river by the help of Pip but he is following by his enemy, Compeyson, who tips off the police and starts fighting with Abel. Abel ends up badly wounded while Compeyson drowns which leads to Abel receiving death penalty. Abel takes his death penalty as God's forgiveness and welcomes death. Pip, distraught, ends up in debt jail and falls ill. Joe helps Pip and takes care of him.
- Joe meets with Herbert and leaves for London again for trade. Years later, he returns and meets Estella in Ms. Havisham's house, who was now dead. It is revealed that Estella had become a widow and that she had become a better person by leaving aside her greed and selfish desires. The story ends with them leaving Ms. Havisham's garden, hand in hand, with Pip believing that they will never part again.
