Steponas is on the way to Denmark to visit his son Darius who is a business student at CBS. He's quite poor but very honest man and works hard to make the ends meet.
During the 14 hour bus ride he makes friends with Stasys who is a bus driver and offers him to make a wonderful deal by 'collecting' some bikes in Copenhagen and bringing them back to Lithuania. Steponas refuses it strictly.
The students at CBS are very 'smart' and it is extremely hard for Darius to fit in. He cannot afford an Apple laptop, a new Iphone etc. Darius works in the bar and when he is off to work, Steponas decides to 'help' his son by taking the Stasys' offer.
Darius explains his dad that a lot of Danes have prejudices against Eastern Europeans because of the common thefts and that this makes his life much harder. Steponas is very much afraid that son would find out what he is doing while Darius is at work. Steponas never tells him, however he starts to understand his son and is feeling very guilty.
Steponas wants to quit but cannot anymore because of the pressure from other lithuanians. He tries to convince himself that he is some kind of hero. Others tell him that danes are receiving insurance money for their stolen bikes and thus nobody is really hurt in the end.. He tries to believe it. Inside drama is peaking.
On the way back to Lithuania Steponas and Stasys are being stopped by the German police but run away from them. They end up next to the monument of Steponas and Stasys (Lithuanian heroes with the same names as the main characters, who in 1932 flew back form US with a partially homemade plane and mysteriously died in Germany).
Being next to Darius and Girenas monument Steponas ir Stasys experience he eye opening moment. They suddenly understand that everybody has their own choices in life and these decisions involve other people. They finally understand that there is nothing heroic in stealing.
This film wants to point out. FOR DANES: 1. Lithuanians think that danes don't care about their bikes too much. They think that danes are getting money back from the insurance companies and in the end everybody is happy. They are not against the Danish people, they are against the system. That is a post-sovietic understanding that I aim to explain more. 2. People who are stealing in Denmark do not live here and vice versa.
This film will have a big potential internationally, because the same problems are faced in Sweden, Norway, UK by the thieves from all Eastern European block (Rumania, Poland, Bulgaria etc.) Because the psychology behind these crimes is rather the same.
For Lithuanians: 1. This is a bigger issue than we think it is. Nothing will change unless we will take an action to change our way of thinking. In other words as long as Lithuanians will buy cheap bikes from Western Europe, there will be people stealing them. We have to start from ourselves.
