  • Phineas Gage was a normal well-liked railway builder in the 1800's. He had one of the most dangerous jobs which used explosives. As he was working Gauge got distracted and the pole flew through his head and the frontal lobe of his brain.
  • One day in 1848 as he was working, Gage got distracted and the pole flew through his head behind his left eye and the frontal lobe of his brain. Phineus was unconscious for just a few minutes, then, to much surprise, he woke up and began talking!
  • There are no similar cases that include frontal lobe damage, im sorry.
  • in 1994 Dasmos Et Al used 3d imaging to re-create Phineas Gage's skull to see what parts of the brain had most likely been damaged, the results showed that the metal pole had gone through. the results showed that it had gone through the frontal lobe of Gage's brain.
  • One strength of Dasmos study is that he was able to use modern daytechnology to clarify the events of 1848, this gives the results more scientific status. For example by using computer imaging it meant that the evidence could be seen and not just inferred from. This is a strength because it further increases the scientific understanding of Phineas Gage.
  • Another weakness of the study was that it could not be generalised to the people as the brain damage was unique to Gage. For example, the exact nature of Gage's injury was unique and unlikely to happen again. This is a weakness because it may not be helpful to other people with frontal lobe damage.
  • A weakness of the study is that even though they were able to reconstruct a 3D image of Gage's brain the reports about the incident were over 150 years old. For example, Gage's doctor said that he there up a 'teacup-full' of the brain. this is a weakness because the information may not be very accurate.
