- My day starts out in the atmosphere. From there I travel into the soil . In order for me to be usable I have to convert from atmospheric nitrogen to ammonium. Cyanobacteria in the soil converts me into ammonium or NH4 so I can continue my day. When this happens to me it is called Nitrogen Fixation.
- Hi my name is Timmy and I am one of the many molecules inside the nitrogen cycle. Today show you a regular day on the job.
- Now for me to continue my work I must be converted from ammonium to a nitrite so that I am useable for a plant. Nitrifying bacteria helps turn me into a nitrite(NO2-) and then a nitrate(NO3+). When I covert from ammoniums to a nitrite and nitrate it's called Nitrification.
- Now that I have been converted to a nitrite to nitrate from ammonium Plants can now use me. When the plant takes me from the soil and turn me from a nitrate into a protein it is called assimilation.
- Sometimes the job has some different experiences like when the plant I'm in gets eaten. When the rabbit puts out waste I am put back into the soil and go through a process called ammonification. When this happens decomposers break me down to ammonium where I will go through the nitrification process again.
- Now it's time for me to head home. In order for that to happen I will have to travel to warm wet anoxic soil. Once I get there I can then go through the process of denitrification. In order to go through denitrification bacteria must convert me back into nitrogen. Once that is done I am back to where I once was. Now I go back and start again because I never stop working.
