  • After the Civil War, those in the East of the U.S. were attracted to the West because of the new Gold Rush in the West as well as the large amounts of cheap land. It is 1870 and due to the Homestead Act, John Williams and his family have been promised 160 acres of land for 5 years of agricultural labor in the West. They plan on moving there as soon as possible, where John plans to farm and Jack plans to become a cowboy.

  • The Williams's are about to aboard a train headed to Texas. With the new Transcontinental Railroad, they are able to reach Texas within a week or less by industrial train, much faster than the months-long journey by wagon train.
  • The Next Day....
  • 3 Days Later....
  • Now, before 1870, the Great Plains were a largely unsettled territory where traditional Native Americans lived. There was a lot of open range due to the lack of settlement and that land was home to various cattle, especially the ever-so-valuable bison/buffalo.
  • 5 Long Years of Hard Work Later....
  • Pre-1870 Texas
  • The Williams' ended up encountering some Native Americans on their promised land in Texas, and consequently, conflict outbroke. Just like the Williams's, other settlers fought natives in battles collectively known as the Indian Wars, which lasted for about 25 years.
  • Upon the Willams' s Arrival in Texas...
  • After fighting off Native Americans for days, John, Jack, and Mary Williams finally got to claim ownership of their 160 acres of isolated land and a few animals. However, even with this victory, hardship still fell upon their family because they were still poor and had little-to-no resources for anything, including house building. Now, the Williams's had to start working the dry ground to try to yield crops. To help the family out, Jack kept his word and went off to be a cowboy to earn some quick cash, while John and Mary stayed back to work the dry land under smoltering temperatures. Only God knows how long it will take their suffering to end and prosperity to come around.
  • After 5 long years of blood, sweat, and tears, The Williams's were finally able to create a developing farm with healthy crops and sizeable cattle. Along with the farm, Jack finally returned home from his cowboy adventures with nearly $2,400 that was used upgrade their house from a sod house to concrete house, install barb-wire fencing to keep cattle in and predators out, and create the huge windmill that provided power for the pump that brought groundwater to the surface. From then on, the Williams's lived comfortably and their days of trial and tribulation were finally over.
