- "You shall live if you answer me...beware the axe and say as I require."
- "He knocked at every house, searched every place".
- The knight comes across a lone maiden and takes advantage of her. This outrages people and he is taken to court.
- "Swear to do whatever I shall next require of you".
- "I agree".
- The king wants to cut the Knights head off, but he lets the queen handle it and the queen asks the Knight to find out what women most desire. His answer will determine whether he lives or not.
- "In all the court not one..contradicted what the knight said".
- He searches everywhere for an answer, but is yet to find one.
- "Take all my goods but leave my body free".
- The day of returning to court comes and he still has no answer. He comes across an old lady and asks her for help. He agrees to do the first thing she asks as long as she helps him live.
- He tells the court that what women want most is sovereignty and no one disagrees with him; he is allowed to live.
- The old lady comes forth and tells the court of their agreement. She wants to marry him; he refuses but is forced to marry her.
