- This is Tom. After a long day at school he is very hungry and looks to the refrigerator to see if there is any food.
- Boy am I hungry!
- While eating his food, Tom receives a text message from his friend Bryan telling him to come to Xavier's party although Tom doesn't know him very well.
- I would love to!
- BryanHey Tom! I know your not very close with Xavier, but he's throwing a huge party tonight and you should come!
- I didn't invite you! Who invited you? Get out of here! Do you want to fight?
- B-B-B-Bryan invited me.
- What a loser...
- Upon arrival, Xavier confronts Tom and threats him. This is the external stimulus that triggers Tom's physiological response and initial emotion of his pulse rate increasing and a sense of fear. Status cues such as a big house and being visibly rich boosts Xaviers ego causing him to act like he's better than others.
- Why can't he come
- Xavier is actually very mean.

- I do not want to fight you and I apologize for showing up uninvited.
- As he is very overwhelmed with emotions, Tom doesn't know what to do. But then it comes to him that he should try and defuse the situation and comply with what he wants. This is because he is aware of the cultural script of avoiding a fight or hostile situation.
- Yeah get lost!
- Yeah, I don't like Xavier anymore.
- Lets leave too guys...
- Tom experiences the modified emotional response of relief knowing he handled that situation perfectly and will go home knowing that his emotion management saved him from getting into a fight.
- I should've asked Xavier beforehand if I could come.
- I think I handled that situation well.
- I am very glad there was no fight.
- As Xavier thought he looked high and mighty telling Tom to leave, his friends all leave him. They leave with nothing but a newly developed stigmatism toward Xavier. This is because of his actions, an informal punishment was induced by his friends because what he did was snobby, rude and uncalled for.
