- And if I go to Dickinson College, where my parents work, it'll be free, and I can see them all the time. How great would that be?
- I spent my whole life growing up around small liberal arts colleges. That's exactly the kind of school I want to go to. Big schools and big cities aren't for me.
- Uh oh, spoke too soon. I'm gay and have got to get out of small towns if I want to really be this new version of myself. I want to be in a big city.
- With my grades and leadership experience, I might be able to get into Columbia or Penn. But would they really accept me? And would my family really be able to afford if they've been pushing me to go to Dickinson for free? Does that mean we don't have money for college?
- Both my parents I took on some federal debt, but we agreed that it was worth it and would be manageable over time. And let's be real - I'm 18 and thinking a lot more about my new life in the city than I am about loan repayment strategies.
- Thanks to a need-based financial aid package and a tuition benefit (that may or may not have been incorrectly applied to give me more aid than I expected) we were able to make it work, and here I am at Penn!
