- Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18th July 1918. He was born in the South African village of Mvezo.
- His father is Chief Gadla Mandela, the village's leader. His mother is Nosekeni Fanny.
- Nosekeni Fanny and her family moved to another village, Qunu. In that village, Rolihlahla loved to play with other children.
- At the age of seven, his mother decided to send him school. The teacher gave him a new name called Nelson.
- When he was 10 years old, Nelson's father died. Nelson and his mother moved to the Great Place at Mqhekezweni.
- Nelson got a new friend called Justice and they attended school together.
