- Richard Spikes was born on October 2, 1878, in Dallas, Texas. Spikes learned to cut hair in his father's basement. He worked as a barber, a mechanic, and a saloon keeper. Most people believe that his early professions influenced his later inventions. In 1900 Spikes married a woman named Lula B. Charlton, who he had one son with.
- In 1907 Spikes creates his first invention, the beer tap. After that, he goes on to patten many things such as a self locking rack for billiard cues, a break testing machine, a pantograph for conveying electrical current to trolleys’ wires, a combination milk bottle opener and cover, a device to obtain average samples and temperatures of tank liquids for automobiles and industry, an improved gear shift transmission system, and a horizontally swinging barber’s chair.
- In 1962 Richard Spikes pattens his last invention at the age of 84, an automatic brake safety system. He then passed away on January 22, 1965, in Los Angeles California at the age of 86.
