  • Simple Machines by Brendan Hahn
  • 1. LEVER
  • A lever is a rigid bar that rotates on a fixed point called a fulcrum. It makes work easier by reducing the force needed to move a load. By changing the distance between the force and the fulcrum and between the load and the fulcrum you can reduce the amount of effort needed to move a load, making a job easier.
  • A fork is an example of a lever we use everyday.
  • 2. Pulley
  • A pulley uses grooved wheels and a rope to raise, lower or move a load. It helps make a job easier by reversing the direction of the lifting force. As someone pulls a rope down, the pulley lifts the load up. If you add more wheels, the effort is reduced even more.
  • An example of a pulley that we use daily is a window shade.
  • 3. Wedge
  • A wedge is an object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge. This is used to push two object apart, cut an object into two pieces or hold objects in place. A wedge changes the direction of the input force which redirects this force outward, making the job easier.
  • A door stop is an example of a wedge that we use everyday. The force used to push it under the edge of the door is transferred downward, resulting in frictional force that resists sliding across the floor.
  • 4. Wheel and axle
  • The rod in the center of the wheel is an axle and the wheel and axle work together to move heavy loads for a long distance with less force. The axle supports the load and helps balance the wheel as it turns.
  • A pencil sharpener is an example of a wheel and axle that we use everyday at school.

  • 5. Inclined plane
  • An inclined plane is a slanting surface connecting a lower level to a higher level. It makes work easier by using less energy and force to raise an object because you must move them at a greater distance. So the longer the ramp distance, the easier it will be to do the work.
  • Stairs are an example of an inclined plane that we use daily.
  • 6. Screw
  • A screw is an inclined plane that is wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials. A screw reduces the amount of force and energy required to drive the screw to be spread out over time (if even a short period of time) rather than all at once. This can make the work seem easier.
  • A screw lid jar is an example of a screw that we use every day.
  • A wheelbarrow is an example of a complex machine which is made up of 3 simple machines....the wheel and axle, inclined plane and lever.
