  • Historical Timeline and Key Events During the African American Civil Rights Movement
  • Ben's Notes : Civil Rights Mvt. Floyd 6th Period. 
  • January 1865: Event #1 
  • The 13th Amendment is approved and ratified in the U.S. 
  • This first event was important because this is the start of the new social and political freedoms that African Americans had in the U.S. the 13th amendment helped bring on other new freedoms such as the right to vote Andrew job opportunities.
  • 1865: Event #2
  • Freedmen's Bureau is Established
  • Congress approves and establishes the Freedmen's Bureau to help emancipated slaves.
  • This second event was important because this was a major way that African Americans were able to economically get jobs and receive treatment during the reconstruction era and during the civil war.
  • "We give food, shelter, jobs, water to all who need it." - Freedmen's Bureau
  • 1881: Event #3
  • Booker T. Washington founds the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute
  • This event is important because it quickly becomes the leading school for black higher education. Socially, African Americans are getting more knowledge and better education systems because of Booker T. Washington, who prided his thoughts on knowledge and education.

  • 1909: Event #4
  • The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is founded by W.E.B. Du Bois
  • The arise of the NAACP is important because it would serve as the country's most influential African American Civil Rights organization, which is heavily dedicated to providing political equality and social justice.
  • 1914: Event #5
  • Marcus Garvey establishes the Universal Negro Improvement Association
  • This event is important because it is one of the first black nationalist organizations to promote and take pride in their race and create a sense of worldwide unity among blacks across the U.S.
