  • One major theme of "The Monsters are due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that Mankind is its own worst enemy. For example, When the aliens are watching the town and discussing how mankind is its own worst enemy. The aliens prove this by turning a couple lights off which lead to the humans demise. Another example of Mankind being its own worst enemy is when the residents turn violently on each other and chaos ensues. This supports the theme Mankind is its own worst enemy because when they start to kill each other they all become their own enemy. A final example of Mankind is its own worst enemy is when the residents turn on Charlie and claim that he is the monster. Throughout the story the residents are constantly turning on each other and switching sides which make them enemies to each other. In conclusion the story "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" shows how mankind is its own worst enemy by demonstrating all the wrongdoing that happens throughout the world and the story.
