- The families are metals, nonmetals and metalloids. Metals are located to the left of the zigzag staircase except hydrogen. They are shiny, conductors, malleable and ductile. Non-metals are the opposite, they are dull, insulators and brittle. They are located at the right of the zigzag staircase. Metalloids are part of the mixed group 3 through 17, they can be metals, non-metals and metalloids. They are also known as semiconductors
