- When Stella see's the new neighbors moving in she doesn't like it because she thinks they'll recognize her. She says, "We always know our own, her mother said" (Bennett 149). Stella's having many things going through her mind right now because she's been passing for white for so long now, and the new neighbors moving in could be a way of her getting caught.
- When Jude finds Stella, Jude tells her to call Desiree. Then Stella said, "It's too much, she said. I can't go back through that door. It's another life, you understand?" (Bennett 249). This shows Stella's effect on Jude because they've been looking for Stella for so long, and now that Jude's found her, Stella doesn't want anything to do with them.
- While the girls are playing, Stella and Loretta have a talk and build their friendship. In the text it says, "Somehow Loretta Walker had become the only person she could talk to" (Bennett 174). Stella likes Loretta and it's easy to talk to her. Stella has been passing for white so many years so she feels Loretta understands her.
