Athos finds Jakob (the kitten) in Biskupin after Jakob witnesses his family being murdered by the Nazis. Jakob is unsure if his sister was killed along side their parents, and this haunts Jakob. Athos decides to take Jakob back to Greece to raise and love him as his own.
Athos takes Jakob back to Greece and after living there for a few years, they move to Toronto. Athos can tell that what happened to Jakob's sister Bella weighs heavily on Jakob and limits him from experiencing life.
Athos and Jakob move to Toronto and after a few years of living there, Athos passes away. Jakob continues to live in Toronto, struggling to cope with the death of his sister and Athos. He then meets and marries a female cat named Alex.
Alex and Jakob get married, however, Alex cannot empathize with Jakob's pain of losing Bella. Because of this, Jakob cannot move on from his pain and becomes emotionally unavailable. This drives them apart and they eventually divorce.
Years later, Jakob meets another female cat named Michaela. Jakob and Michaela fall in love and when Jakob tells her about his sister, Michaela cries. Michaela is able to empathize with Jakob's pain and this finally allows him to move on.
Jakob finally moves on from the pain he has felt his entire life and can truly experience life with Michaela, instead of just going through the motions. Jakob realizes that he must give what he most needs, and that he must make love necessary.
