- 24 male students were chosen to participate (12 prisoners, 12guards). The prisoners and guards were selected at random to avoid bias. The participants who were due to play prisoners were arrested at night in their homes and bundled into in front of their neighbours. They were given uniforms for them to conform to their roles
- Participants conformed to their new social roles, however a few days in prisoners started to rebel. Some of the guards were hostile and dehumanising and weren't prevented from doing so. They controlled when they used the toilets, they disrupted their sleep by waking them in the middle of the night, they gave them menial tasks. Even Zimbardo overlooked this abusive behaviour.

- Zimbardo had intended for the experiment to last 2 weeks but on the sixth day, it was terminated, due to the emotional breakdowns of the prisoners, and excessive aggression of the guards.
