  • In this scene the main character, Odysseus, and his men are escaping the Cyclops' cave where he was holding them. Odysseus decides to taunt Polyphemus which results in the cyclops getting mad and throwing a very large boulder at their boat but he misses. The cyclops gets very upset and summons his father Poseidon to make sure Odysseus and his men never get home.
  • Odysseus gets a ride home on the Phaican ship and falls into a very deep sleep when they arrive to his home land of Ithaca. the Phaicans take him and his belongings off their boat and leave him there.
  • Odysseus wakes up in Ithaca but is very confused. He thinks he's not in Ithaca. A shepherd walks towards him and Odysseus asks them where he is. The shepherd doesn't say anything and Odysseus starts bragging about his journey and how much money he has. He says if he can find his way home he will pay the shepherd .
  • Once Odysseus is done bragging the shepherd says that he is Athena and that she was with him all along. She says that everything that happened on his journey home was willed and planned all along by her. Athena believes that she deserves more credit for his journey. She begins telling him what has happened in Ithaca since he has been gone because she wants to use him to kill the suitors.
  • After Athena tells Odysseus what has been happening in Ithaca she disguises him as a beggar and tells him what she wants him to do. She tells him that she wants to help him kill the suitors who have been trying to marry his wife.
  • The Phaican ship is minutes away from being home. Poseidon doesn't know that Odysseus is not on the ship and he turns the ship into stone by his son's wishes. The phaicans that aren't on the boat see this tragic scene, including the king, and say they are not to help any one anymore.
